Bitcoin is on a slippery slope towards $2,000

Hold onto your hats, bitcoin investors - the cryptocurrency is tumbling again.

Bitcoin, the most talked-about cryptocurrency, was trading 7.47 per cent lower at $2,065.86 this morning, according to CoinDesk data.

The digital currency has retreated after a striking rise throughout the first half of 2017. The price of one coin shot up from less than $900 in January to an all-time high of more than $3,000 in June.

However, the cryptocurrency faces a potentially devastating split in its underlying technology later this month.

Ether, the cryptocurrency that powers the ethereum blockchain, also dropped more than seven per cent this morning to below the key $200 point.

Ether's price has also soared this year, rising from less than $10 per token to around $400 at its height.

This morning, ether tokens were trading 7.59 per cent lower at $184.55.
