The federal holiday, which dates back to 1885, was established to celebrate George Washington. Today, Presidents Day occurs on the third Monday of February and has since expanded to recognize all 45 presidents of the United States of America. Since it’s a federal holiday, government offices will be closed, the post office will not deliver mail on Presidents Day, and most banks will not be open today. U.S. exchanges are closed for Presidents Day 2020, which falls on February 17 this year. The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq, and bond markets will resume trading at their normal hours on Tuesday, February 18.
This is the last time the stock market will be closed for a holiday in the U.S. until Good Friday on April 10.
Are international markets closed too?
The Toronto Stock Exchange is also shut down today, but not because of the American holiday Presidents Day. Instead, the exchange will give Canadian investors the day off for the provincial celebration known as Family Day in Ontario.
