Paul Rabil, co-founder of the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL), said Thursday that the new pro league is similar to an "early stage Silicon Valley startup.”
The lacrosse league has six teams and 160 players. The 14-week season kicks off June 1, with stops in 12 cities. The games will air on NBC.
Rabil explained his strategy starting the league to investors at SALT on Thursday.
To start the league, Rabil and his older brother Mike, an entrepreneur, first needed to recruit players. "You need to have the best players in the world to establish a foothold.”
Rabil said players are even more important than teams today. "People care more about athletes than teams and leagues," he said.
The Rabil brothers' pitch to the players: Good wages, guaranteed health care and stock options in the new venture.
After the Rabils signed up players, they tried to figure out how to organize the league's schedule, find venues to host games, and pitch television networks to distribute the games.
"You have to have live events and they’ve got to kick ass,” said Rabil.
The league also needed to find a partner to distribute the games. The Rabil brothers sold NBC on their vision.
Despite the growth of streaming services, "being on television carries a lot of weight," Rabil said.
